Current Complementary Medicine Issues

This section will be updated regularly, please check again soon.

Following problems resulting from the Pan Pharmaceuticals issues early in 2003, relating to the unavailability of many hundreds of complementary medicines and dietary supplements, the NHCA (Natural Health Care Alliance) was formed by a group of senior manufacturers, suppliers, retail store owners, industry experts, and representatives of the practitioners and consumers.

The NHCA was officially launched in Sydney and has met regularly to work at resolving the difficulties and to help coordinate and present a united voice to the Government. Dr Bob Grace PhD and Natasha Lokteff (Regulatory Affairs Officer) of ACONT Inc were founding members and have attended the meetings in Sydney. This was to include devices, but the largest problems to date have been concerning the damage to manufacturers and suppliers of complementary medicines, so device issues have not been seriously addressed so far. This is one of the reasons behind forming the ACONT ADC.

Competency-Based Standards

ACONT recognises the importance of Competency-Based Standards (CBS), and was involved in the development of several CBS for the professions of the Natural and Traditional Therapies through the Federation of Natural and Traditional Therapists Ltd (FNTT). The importance of the CBS are to ensure that any Natural Therapist, whatever the modality pursued, can competently do what they say they do, whether that be Naturopathy, Homoeopathy, Herbal, Bioenergetic and Magnetic, or Remedial Therapies, etc. For further information on CBS contact the ACONT office.
